Archxus is an NGO focused on developing disaster resilience and sustainability in the built environment to support and work with residents, communities and cultures before, during and after a crisis.
We emphasize the importance of preserving nature, humanity, cultural practices and physical manifestations, through co-design and the nexus approach.
Creating a Positive Impact
ARCHXUS actively works towards enhancing disaster resilience and promoting sustainability of the built environment in the humanitarian context.
Our key initiatives include:
- Consulting and Project Management: Providing expert services in planning and implementing projects in target countries. From shelters to homes, infrastructures, and community planning.
- Network Building: Creating networks around disaster resilience, sustainability, and humanitarian architecture.
- Advocacy: Engaging in dialogues, education and training through various channels, lectures, and workshops, promoting collaboration and sharing insights.
- Internship Opportunities: We aim to provide internship opportunities for students interested in humanitarian work. We believe in investing in the next generation, creating a community of professionals dedicated to making a positive impact.
With years of experience in humanitarian architecture field, emergency responses and recovery, we’ve learned that alongside environmental sustainability and physical resilience, considering the socio-cultural dimension is crucial. Our work is grounded in a humble acknowledgment that true impact comes from understanding and respecting the communities we serve.
The name Archxus reflects our core belief— humanitarian architecture at the intersection of multi-level sustainability and the Triple Nexus approach, connecting emergency responses, development and peacebuilding.

Kristjana Adalgeirsdottir

+ 10 years of experience in humanitarian construction and shelter field.
- Red Cross delegate with deployment experiences in a.o. Iraq, Philippines and Ukraine (ICRC; IFRC; FinRC, Swiss RC)
- Shelter Box Response Team member, with field experiences in a.o. Kenya and the Philippines
- Doctoral researcher at Aalto University with focus on cultural sustainability in humanitarian construction
- Mentor at the multidisciplinary master level programme Sustainable Global Technology at Aalto University with PBL (Proble Based Learning) cases in refugee camps in Brazil, Tanzania, Greece, and recovery sites in Nepal
- Guest lecturer on humanitarian responses at UIC, UBI, JIBS and Aalto University
- Member of Aalto WitLAB and Associate Researcher at HUMLOG Institute (Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain managements) at Hanken School of Economics.
