At the conference ”The Presence of Past Disaster”, organized by INTBAU at Cambridge University in May 2024, Kristjana shared her research on the Disaster Relief Houses built in Iceland after the Heimaey volcano eruption in 1973.
While each recovery and disaster response project is unique, the study of the Nordic modular wooden houses give valuable insights, and contribute to the ongoing global discussion on important factors supporting sustainable post-disaster housing projects.
Key issues highlighted:
1. Locally Integrated solutions: tailored to fit local contexts, climate, and multisectoral needs.
2. Adaptable design and techniques: allowing for adjustments and improvements.
3. Involvement of the local stakeholders in the decision making
4. Planning for long-term solutions from the beginning of the responses
